You need one good line, and you need it soon. Maybe it's for a birthday card, a lunchbox note or a photo caption, or for winning an argument with a seven-year-old. These dinosaur puns are sorted by where you'll use them, so you can skip straight to your section and not wade through three hundred near-repeats.
We sell dinosaur shirts for a living, so we've spent more time than is healthy deciding which dino puns land and which just get a groan. Those notes are in here too, along with a short guide to making your own.
Short, quick, and good for a text or a sticky note.
Clean, simple and short enough for a lunchbox napkin. Most of these work best said out loud with a roar on the end.
For the youngest dinosaur fans, the line is already printed on the Rawr Means I Love You baby tee, which comes in baby sizes from 6 months.
A birthday card needs a pun that works with "Happy Birthday" in front of it. These do.
That last one is true, which makes it a good card for the fact-checker in your family. Birds descend from small feathered theropods, so the robin on your feeder counts as a living dinosaur.
What to write after the pun: keep it to one more line. "Have a roar-some birthday! Can't wait to celebrate with you." The pun is the headline. Don't stack three in a row.
Valentine's Day is when dinosaur puns get the most use, and they're cheesy enough to suit it.
If the card needs a gift with it, our dinosaur Valentine's gifts guide picks the ones that suit a partner, not a five-year-old.
For cards, gift tags and the family group chat in December.
Our Christmas sweaters are puns you can wear. The Tree Rex ugly Christmas sweater shows a T. rex on its tiptoes, stretching its tiny arms to put the star on the tree. It's a knitted design, not a print. The dinosaur Christmas sweater guide covers the rest, including Wrap Rex, who has the same tiny-arms trouble with a present.
For mugs, staff-room jokes and anyone who's had a long week.
The first one is a real mug. The Tea-Rex Time mug comes in 11 oz and 15 oz, white ceramic, for coffee, tea or hot chocolate.
Add -saurus to any family title and it works. It's the easiest dinosaur pun there is, so it turns up in every family photo and every Mother's and Father's Day card.
Two of those are full collections. The Mamasaurus collection has 21 designs, and the Dadasaurus collection has 12, so a matching parents' set is easy to put together.
The best dinosaur puns get the science right. Each of these real names has a meaning, and the meaning has a joke in it.
| Dinosaur | What the name actually means | The pun |
|---|---|---|
| Tyrannosaurus rex | "Tyrant lizard king" | T. wrecks: for any toddler, any kitchen |
| Triceratops | "Three-horned face" | Tri, tri again |
| Brontosaurus | "Thunder lizard" | Bronto-snore-us: for someone who snores like thunder |
| Pachycephalosaurus | "Thick-headed lizard" | For someone stubborn. Its name already did the work |
| Ankylosaurus | "Fused lizard" | Thank-ylosaurus: for a thank-you card |
| Iguanodon | "Iguana tooth" | I-guana-know: for when you don't |
| Stegosaurus | "Roofed lizard" | Steg-o-saw-us coming |
| Diplodocus | "Double beam" | Diplo-doc-us: for a doctor, or a vet |
| Spinosaurus | "Spine lizard" | Spin-o-saurus: for a DJ or a cyclist |
| Allosaurus | "Different lizard" | 'Allo-saurus: a greeting |
| Velociraptor | "Swift thief" | Veloci-rapper: fast talker |
| Dracorex hogwartsia | "Dragon king of Hogwarts" | Not a pun. That's its real name |
Dracorex really was named after Hogwarts. It was described in 2006, and children visiting the Children's Museum of Indianapolis helped choose the name. Most paleontologists now think it was a young Pachycephalosaurus, so the thick-headed lizard gets the last word.
Pterodactyls aren't dinosaurs. They're pterosaurs, flying reptiles that lived alongside the dinosaurs. We'll still allow the puns, because the silent P is too good to waste.
"Pteroble" is the one we liked enough to print. The Pteroble Puns tee is our shirt for anyone who tells these at dinner. It's a soft, 100% cotton premium tee that runs a little big, so size down if you like a closer fit.
For the photo of you next to the museum skeleton.
Most dino puns come from five moves. Once you know them, you can write one for any card in about a minute.
The best ones use two moves at once. Tea-Rex Time uses a swap and a sound-alike, and the Tree Rex sweater swaps in "rex" and adds the tiny arms.
What is the most famous dinosaur pun? "Do-you-think-he-saurus?" is the classic. It's the punchline to "What do you call a blind dinosaur?" Thesaurus and Tea-Rex are close behind.
What's a good dinosaur pun for a birthday? "Have a roar-some birthday" suits any age. For someone turning 40 or older, "You're not old, you're Jurassic" gets the bigger laugh.
What's a cute dinosaur pun for a Valentine? "You make my heart go rawr" is the classic. "You're the Tri to my ceratops" is for couples who like a groan.
Are dinosaur puns and dinosaur jokes the same thing? Not quite. A pun is wordplay, like dino-mite. A joke has a setup and a punchline: "Why can't a T. rex clap? Because they're extinct." This page sticks to puns.
Is a pterodactyl a dinosaur? No. Pterodactyls were pterosaurs, flying reptiles that were close cousins of the dinosaurs. The puns still count.
Collected enough to wear one? The Pteroble Puns tee is the shirt for the friend who tells these at dinner.
