The mornings went cold about a week ago, which is usually when people start looking for a dinosaur hoodie. Then they open a shop page, scroll fifty of them, and every listing looks broadly the same — a dinosaur, a hood, a price somewhere between forty and seventy dollars.
They are not the same. Across our own dinosaur hoodie collection of 57 designs there are really only two kinds of hoodie, and the difference between them decides the fabric you get, the size you order, the colour you can pick and what you pay. Once you can tell them apart in the product photo, the choice takes about thirty seconds.
All-over print. The dinosaurs run edge to edge — across the sleeves, over the hood, round the back, with no blank space. The whole garment is printed as fabric before it's sewn, which is why the pattern never stops at a seam. Look for a busy, wall-to-wall design and a listing with only a size option and no colour choice. There can't be a colour choice: the print is the colour.
Graphic print. One artwork on the chest, sitting on a plain coloured hoodie. Look for a listing that offers you a colour and a size — black, maroon, forest green, military green, and so on.
That single tell — colour option or no colour option — is the fastest way to know which kind you're looking at before you read a word of the description.
Worth knowing before you commit, because they feel completely different on.
| All-over print | Graphic print | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | Colorful Dinos, Crazy 90's, Neon Dinos | T-Rex Skeleton, Allosaurus, Raptor Art |
| Fabric | 95% recycled polyester, 5% spandex | 100% cotton face; 65% ring-spun cotton / 35% polyester |
| Inside | Brushed fleece | Fleece-backed cotton blend |
| Weight | 9.08 oz/yd² (308 g/m²) | Not listed per garment |
| Hood | Double-lined, printed on both sides | 3-panel, self-fabric patch on the back |
| Colour options | None — the print is the colour | Up to 10 colourways on some designs |
| Sizes | 2XS–6XL on most designs | S–3XL, some to 5XL |
| Price | $54.99–$67.49 | $39.99–$50.99 |
The all-over prints are the heavier, warmer, more polyester-forward garment — 308 g/m² with brushed fleece inside is a proper cold-evening hoodie, and the recycled-polyester face is what makes the edge-to-edge printing possible in the first place. The graphic hoodies are the cotton-blend classic: front pouch pocket, drawstrings, softer hand, and the one you reach for if you don't want to be wearing a pattern.
One genuinely useful detail on the women's dinosaur hoodies: several of them, including Trade Husband For Nuggies, are built on a 50/50 pre-shrunk cotton-poly blank with air-jet spun yarn and 1×1 rib cuffs. Pre-shrunk matters. It is the difference between the hoodie you bought and the hoodie you own after three washes.
This is where most returns come from, so it's worth two minutes.
All-over print hoodies run 2XS to 6XL on most designs and are cut to a relaxed unisex fit. Relaxed unisex means roomy through the body. If you're between sizes and you want it close-fitting, size down; if you plan to wear a jumper under it in December, don't.
Graphic hoodies run S to 3XL, with a few — Baryonyx, Oviraptor, Trade Wife For Nuggies — going to 4XL and 5XL. These list a real measurement chart rather than a letter, and it's the one to trust. On the T-Rex Skeleton hoodie, for instance:
| Size | Chest width | Length |
|---|---|---|
| S | 20 in | 27 in |
| M | 21 in | 28 in |
| L | 23 in | 29 in |
| XL | 25 in | 30 in |
| 2XL | 26½ in | 31 in |
| 3XL | 28 in | 32 in |
Chest width there is the flat measurement across the garment, not around your chest — so lay a hoodie you already like face-down, measure armpit to armpit, and match that number. It beats guessing every time.
Kids hoodies are sized by age, not by letter. The kids dinosaur hoodie range runs XXS (1–2 years) through XL (11–12 years), and the chart is in inches and centimetres on every listing: XXS is a 14½ in chest and a 16½ in body length, XL is 19⅓ in and 24½ in. If your child is tall for their age — and dinosaur-aged children usually are — go by the body length rather than the birthday.
Sorted by who you're actually shopping for, since that's how the decision really gets made:
Graphic prints start at $39.99 and top out around $50.99. All-over prints start at $54.99 and run to $67.49.
Prices on the all-over designs climb with size — Colorful Dinos is $54.99 at the small end and $65.99 at 6XL — because a 6XL genuinely uses more printed fabric. That's not a surcharge dressed up as sizing; it's the same reason a 6XL costs more to make. Worth knowing so the number at checkout isn't a surprise.
Every hoodie here is printed after you order it rather than pulled off a shelf. That's a deliberate choice — it means no pallet of unsold stock going to landfill at the end of the season — but it does mean a lead time, and the lead time varies by garment.
The listings quote production and shipping separately for US standard shipping. The all-over print hoodies list roughly 2–4 business days to produce and 3–8 to ship; the cotton graphic hoodies list about 2–7 to produce and 2–5 to ship; the kids hoodies list 2–7 and 6–7. Call it one to two and a half weeks door to door, and check the specific listing before you count on a date.
Practically: for a Halloween-week hoodie, order by mid-October. For Christmas, order by the first week of December and stop reading gift guides.
Will an all-over print fade in the wash? The design is printed into the fabric rather than laid on top of it, which is why the hood is patterned inside and out. Wash cold and it stays put. The kids hoodies go further and are explicitly rated not to peel, flake or crack.
Is a dinosaur hoodie warm enough for winter? The all-over prints are, at 308 g/m² with brushed fleece inside. The cotton graphic hoodies are a three-season weight — good from September to April with a layer under.
Can I get a matching one for my kid? Not in the same design, mostly — the adult and kids ranges are printed on different garments. What does match is the theme, and several families do exactly this at Halloween; we wrote about that in family dinosaur costume ideas.
Unisex or gendered sizing? The all-over prints are cut unisex relaxed. The graphic hoodies are drawn from men's, women's and youth blanks depending on the design, which is why the size range shifts between listings. The measurement chart on each listing is the authority.
What if I want the dinosaur without the hood? Men's dinosaur sweatshirts is the crewneck range, and there's a much wider spread of tees and other pieces across dinosaur apparel.
If you want warm, bold and unmistakably dinosaur, buy an all-over print and size for a relaxed fit. If you want soft, cotton, and a colour that goes with the rest of your wardrobe, buy a graphic print and measure a hoodie you already own first.
Both live in the same place: the dinosaur hoodie collection.
