Babies don't care what's printed on their clothes. The people buying them care a lot. Newborn dinosaur clothes: start with the size, not the print

This is the part most shoppers get wrong, so it goes first. Our standard bodysuits start at 3–6 months, and the size guide on the listing says that size fits a baby 20–25 inches long and 12–16 lbs. Plenty of babies come home smaller than that.

If the baby hasn't arrived yet, you have two good options:

When a baby falls between sizes, go by length rather than weight. A bodysuit that's too short in the body is the one that stops snapping.

The bodysuits, by who you're buying for

Every standard bodysuit is the same garment: an envelope neckline that stretches over a head without a fight, three snaps at the leg for diaper changes, and side seams so it holds its shape in the wash. What changes is the print and the color list, which runs from two colors on some designs to seven on others.

A baby tee, for when bodysuits feel too babyish

The Abstract Dino Forest baby tee is a regular short-sleeve tee in 6–12m through 18–24m: 100% combed ring-spun cotton (heather colors are 52/48 cotton/poly), 4.2 oz and pre-shrunk, with a relaxed fit. It's the piece for an older baby who's crawling or cruising, when a bodysuit starts to feel like a uniform. Pair it with soft pants you already own.

Dinosaur baby bibs

Bibs are the most practical dinosaur gift there is, because they get used three times a day. We make two kinds:

Building a baby shower gift

A gift people remember usually covers the first few months, not just the first week. One way to put it together:

1. One bodysuit in the size for right now (NB, or 3–6m).
2. One in the next size up, so it still fits at three or four months.
3. A bib, because it'll get used more than either.

For a shower date, a due date or Christmas morning, count back from the day you need it and leave a few days spare. December mail runs slow.
